Vaginal Atrophy

Vaginal atrophy is thinning of the lining of the vagina. Condition is generally caused by low hormone, mainly estrogen levels in the vagina. Although this commonly starts in women in their 40s, there are other conditions that could trigger it earlier. Some of the symptoms may include:

  • Vaginal dryness
  • Vaginal burning
  • Vaginal discharge
  • Genital itching
  • Burning with urination
  • Urgency with urination
  • More urinary tract infections
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Light bleeding after intercourse
  • Discomfort with intercourse
  • Decreased vaginal cialis generique lubrication during sexual activity
  • Shortening and tightening of the vaginal canal

It is truly unfortunate that this common condition is often times undiagnosed and untreated despite its significantlynegative impact on a woman’s quality of life and sexual health.

The traditional treatment for this condition is to replaceestrogen. This is doneusing different vaginalcreams, gels, tablets, and rings.

Vaginal hormones are not well tolerated by all patients. They may have serious side effects:

  • Risks from Systemic Absorption
  • Cardiovascular Disorders
  • Uterine and Breast cancers
  • Probable Dementia
  • Gallbladder Disease
  • Hyper or Hypocalcemia( elevated or low calcium levels)
  • Visual Abnormalities
  • Elevated Blood Pressure
  • Hypertriglyceridemia
  • Liver Impairment
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Fluid Retention
  • Anaphylactic or allergic Reaction
  • Exacerbation of Other Conditions
  • Decrease in efficacy of barrier contraceptive method such as condoms
  • Drug-Laboratory Test Interactions( may cause false readings on many blood tests)

There are many contraindication for vaginal hormone use such as:

  • Undiagnosed abnormal genital bleeding
  • Known, suspected, or history of breast cancer
  • Known or suspected estrogen-dependent abnormal growths
  • Active Deep Venous Thrombosis, Pulmonary Embolism, or a history of these conditions
  • Active arterial thromboembolic disease (for example, stroke and heart attack), or a history of these conditions
  • Known allergic or anaphylactic reaction to esterogen containing vaginal preperations.
  • Known liver dysfunction or disease
  • Known protein C, protein S or antithrombin deficiency or other known thrombophilic, or essentially blood clotting disorders
  • Known or suspected pregnancy

Laser Vaginal resurfacing with the right essentially renews the vaginal mucosa and stimulates collagen production. This could potentially eliminate all symptoms related to vaginal atrophy.

In pictures below one could clearly see the changes and the thickening of the lining of the vagina after laser vaginal resurfacing:

The perimenopause patient histology above shows the vaginal mucosa before laser vaginal CO2 treatment stained with haematoxylin and eosin (H&A) and 60 days following the treatment showing thicker epithelium and the filling of the ablated tissue having a healthy improved tissue that restored trophism and dynamics of the whole epithelium.
